# What to Pack for Thailand

May 5, 2024 Soca Islands

Warm weather all year, modest dress at temples and plenty of cash-only stalls: here's how to pack for Thailand without overthinking it.

## Your Thailand packing guide

Thailand is hot, sticky and busy in the best way. One day you're weaving through Bangkok's markets, the next you're on a beach in the south or walking around the old temple ruins at Ayutthaya. The good news: packing for it is simple once you know three things. It's warm all year, temples expect modest dress, and cash still matters.

Use this guide as a checklist. Start with the documents, then the gear, then the clothes, and finish with the handful of extras that make life easier once you land.

### Before You Pack: Know the Season

Thailand broadly runs on three seasons, and the one you're traveling in shapes most of your clothing choices.

- March to May (hot): the most intense heat of the year, high humidity and very little rain. Think thin fabrics, sun protection and plenty of water.
- June to October (rainy): warm temperatures with heavy afternoon downpours and thunderstorms. Low-lying areas can flood. A poncho or packable rain jacket earns its space.
- November to February (cool): lower humidity, less rain and the most comfortable weather for getting outdoors. Northern areas can feel fresh in the evenings, so bring a light layer.

The south, including Phuket and Krabi, follows its own rhythm. Temperatures stay fairly steady all year, with a wet stretch roughly from April to November and a drier period from December to March. If your itinerary covers both north and south, pack for both.

### Documents and Money

- Passport: it needs at least six months of validity left beyond your stay. Keep a photo of the ID page on your phone and in your email in case the original goes missing. A simple travel wallet keeps your passport, cards and printouts together.
- Visa or entry permission: rules depend on your nationality. Some travelers can enter for short stays without a visa, while others, including Trinidad and Tobago passport holders, may need to apply for an e-visa ahead of time. Requirements change, so check the official Thai e-visa site and your nearest Thai embassy well before you go.
- Flights: carry a printed copy of your tickets as well as the version on your phone, so a dead battery never becomes a problem at check-in.
- Travel insurance: choose a policy that covers medical care, theft or loss and cancellations. Save the policy document to your email and put the insurer's emergency line in your phone contacts.
- Cash: Thailand's currency is the Thai baht (THB). Notes come in 1,000, 500, 100 and 50, plus smaller coins. Street food stalls, markets and smaller towns often run on cash only, so keep a supply on you. You can change money at banks and at clearly marked official exchange counters, and some hotels will swap major currencies too. Larger hotels, shops and restaurants may accept US dollars, but baht is easier almost everywhere.
- Cards: bring at least one credit or debit card that works abroad and let your bank know your travel dates. Thai ATMs generally charge foreign cardholders a fee and cap how much you can take out at once, so fewer, larger withdrawals usually make more sense. Check the current limits and fees with your bank before you leave.

### Your Health Kit

Pharmacies are easy to find in cities, but it's smart to arrive with a small kit of your own.

- Pain relievers and antihistamines
- Insect repellent containing DEET, plus an anti-itch cream for bites
- Band-aids and basic first aid supplies
- Anti-diarrhea medicine such as Imodium
- Sunscreen with a high SPF and a lip balm with SPF
- Any prescription medicines, in their original packaging, with a copy of each prescription
- A letter from your doctor if you have a condition or allergy that might need treatment while you're away

See your doctor or a travel clinic at least six weeks before you fly to sort out any vaccines, and ask whether you need malaria tablets, especially if you're heading into rural highland areas. Once you're there, drink bottled or filtered water only, since tap water isn't considered safe anywhere in the country. Cover up at dawn and dusk to avoid mosquito bites, and take the midday sun seriously.

### Emergency Numbers to Save

Add these to your phone before you land:

- Police: 191
- Tourist Police: 1155 (English, German and French spoken)
- Fire: 199
- Ambulance: 1669
- Tourism Authority of Thailand: 1672

Also save the contact details for your country's embassy in Thailand, your insurer, your airline, and the international lines for your bank and mobile provider so you can block a lost card or phone from abroad.

### Bags, Tech and Toiletries

A soft-sided suitcase or backpack is easier to squeeze into vans, buses and trains than a hard shell. Pair it with a day pack big enough for a water bottle, a camera, sunscreen and a spare layer.

- Plug adapter: Thailand mainly uses Type A sockets (two flat vertical pins), and Type C and Type F sockets (two round pins) are common too. Travelers from the US and the Caribbean can often plug in directly. Visitors from the UK, Australia and New Zealand will need an adapter.
- Phone, camera and chargers, plus a power bank for long days out
- Reusable water bottle for flights, city days and excursions
- Toiletries: deodorant, toothbrush and toothpaste, hand sanitizer, hairbrush and razor
- Skin care for the humidity: moisturizer, a hydrating face mist and reusable bamboo cleansing cloths

### What to Wear

Light, loose and breathable is the rule for almost every day in Thailand. Cotton and linen are your friends, and lighter colors help you stay cooler. Here's how to adjust by activity.

Everyday and city days

- Tees and thin long-sleeved tops
- Shorts, cotton pants and linen pants
- Comfortable sneakers with a good grip
- Sunglasses and a sun hat
- One dressier outfit for a nice dinner or a rooftop bar
- A light sweater or overshirt for strong air conditioning and cooler northern evenings

Temples

Thai people generally dress modestly, and temples expect visitors to do the same. Shoulders and knees should be covered, so long pants, a maxi skirt or a long dress work well. A sarong or a big scarf is handy to throw on as needed, and you can pick one up cheaply at local markets. You'll take your shoes off before going inside, so a pair of socks in your day pack saves you from hot or dusty floors.

Hiking and outdoor days

- Lightweight activewear that dries quickly
- Long pants to keep mosquitoes off your legs
- Trail shoes with good traction (for most routes you won't need full hiking boots)
- A packable rain jacket or poncho, especially in the rainy season

Beach days

- Swimwear
- Sandals or flip-flops
- A cover-up for walking to and from the sand

Swimwear is fine at the beach and in resort areas. Away from the coast, Thailand is fairly conservative, so skip very revealing outfits in towns, markets and anywhere with a religious or community focus.

### Handy Extras

- Local SIM or eSIM: kiosks at the international airport sell data packages as soon as you arrive, and phone shops in towns and cities carry them too. AIS and True are two widely used networks with good coverage. Grabbing one at the airport is usually the easiest option.
- RFID-blocking card holder
- Flight comfort kit: eye mask, neck pillow and noise-canceling headphones
- Quick-dry travel towel
- Small handheld fan for the hottest afternoons

### Apps Worth Downloading

- Grab: the go-to ride-hailing app across Southeast Asia, including motorbike taxis
- Google Translate: point your camera at a menu or sign to read it in English
- XE Currency: quick conversions between baht and your home currency
- Google Maps and TripAdvisor: directions, opening hours and reviews

### Tipping and Local Custom

Tipping isn't required in Thailand, but it's always appreciated. Many restaurants and bars add a service charge to the bill, so check before leaving extra so you don't pay twice. If you're unsure what's appropriate on a Soca Islands trip, your Soca Islands Host can point you in the right direction on the ground.

### Quick Packing Checklist

- Passport, visa or e-visa confirmation, printed flight tickets and insurance details
- Baht in cash plus a card that works abroad
- Health kit, prescriptions and DEET repellent
- Plug adapter (if needed), chargers and a power bank
- Reusable water bottle and high-SPF sunscreen
- Light, breathable clothes plus one warmer layer
- Temple-ready outfit and a sarong or scarf
- Sneakers, trail shoes and sandals
- Rain jacket or poncho
- Soft-sided bag and a day pack
