Explore Marrakech, Porto, Lisbon, Seville and Madrid, then travel onward to Barcelona for the Rotary International Convention: desert sunsets, Douro wine, Lisbon fado, Seville flamenco and a free day in Madrid before the convention.

Arrive in Marrakech — most travellers connect through Casablanca — and transfer privately to the hotel, so the first hour of the trip is yours rather than spent in a queue. Settle in by the pool and let the heat and the noise of the city settle with you. In the evening you meet your Soca Islands Host and the rest of the group over a welcome dinner on a rooftop above the medina, with the sound of the old city rising as the light goes.

Start early, before the heat and the crowds, with a guided walk through the medina: the painted ceilings and courtyards of Bahia Palace, the tilework of Ben Youssef Medersa, and the souks, where a guide is the difference between browsing and getting lost. Then shop the market with a local cook and turn what you have bought into a tagine you sit down to for lunch. The afternoon is free for the pool or a hammam. At sunset you head out to the Agafay desert for a camel ride and dinner under the stars.

Drive out of the city and up into the High Atlas, where the road climbs past terraced fields to a Berber village. From there it is a walk to a waterfall, then lunch shared with a local family — the kind of meal that is the point of the day rather than a stop on the way to something else. You are back in Marrakech by mid-afternoon and the evening is yours, with an optional food walk through the night market in Jemaa el-Fnaa if you still have the legs for it.

A free morning in Marrakech — Jardin Majorelle, with its cobalt walls and bamboo, is a good way to spend it — and then the flight to Porto, about two hours. You land in a different climate and almost a different century: granite, river light and tiled façades instead of red walls and palms. Check in and take an easy first evening in the city. Portugal starts properly tomorrow.

Head inland into the Douro, where the hills are cut into terraces so old they read like contour lines. The day is spent at a family quinta — tastings of what the estate makes, and lunch looking out over the valley — followed by a short boat ride on the river itself, which is the best way to see how improbably steep the planting really is. Back in Porto, the evening is free.

A local guide walks you through Ribeira, the riverfront quarter where the houses stack up the slope in faded colour, and into São Bento station, whose entrance hall is lined with thousands of blue and white azulejos telling the country's history. Then across the water to a cellar in Vila Nova de Gaia to taste port where it is actually aged. In the afternoon you take the Alfa Pendular train south to Lisbon, about three hours, and the evening is free in Chiado.

Begin in Belém, where Jerónimos Monastery shows what Portugal built with the wealth of its sea routes, and where the original pastéis de nata are still turned out to the old recipe. Later you wander Alfama, the oldest part of Lisbon — a knot of lanes and staircases that came through the earthquake when the grand streets did not. The afternoon is free. In the evening, dinner with live fado, which is less a performance than a room agreeing to go quiet.

Up into the hills of Sintra for Pena Palace, a nineteenth-century romantic fantasy in yellow and red that looks assembled from several different buildings by people who were not speaking. Then out to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe, where the cliffs drop into the Atlantic and the wind rather makes the point for you. The afternoon is spent on the seafront at Cascais. The evening is free, with an optional sunset sail on the Tagus.

A short flight to Seville, about an hour. Andalusian afternoons are not for sightseeing, so the plan is deliberately nothing: rest, and let the worst of the heat pass. It lifts in the evening and the city comes out, which is when you join a tapas walk through Triana, across the river, and into the lanes of Santa Cruz — a plate at a time, standing up, the way it is meant to be done.

An early start, which is the only sensible way to see the Real Alcázar: a palace the Moors began and Christian kings kept adding to, so you walk out of one civilisation's geometry and into another's without leaving the building. Then the Cathedral and the Giralda, its bell tower, which began life as a minaret. The afternoon is free. In the evening there is a flamenco show, with dinner afterwards.

Travel to Córdoba for the Mezquita, where a forest of red and white arches runs away from you in every direction and a cathedral was later built in the middle of it — the strangest and probably the best building on this trip. A guide takes you through it and the old Jewish Quarter around it. In the afternoon, the high-speed train to Madrid, under two hours, and the evening is at leisure.

A guided walk through the middle of Madrid — Sol, the arcaded Plaza Mayor and the streets around the Royal Palace — and then the Prado, where you see the highlights rather than attempt the whole thing, because nobody has ever enjoyed the whole thing. Afterwards there is free time in Retiro Park, which is where Madrid actually relaxes. In the evening you toast the trip at a farewell tapas dinner.

A completely free day, built in on purpose: rest, get laundry done and sort yourself out before the Rotary International Convention. If you would rather spend it than recover with it, ask your Host — the Reina Sofía holds Guernica, Toledo is thirty-three minutes away by train and a whole medieval city when you arrive, and Salamanca is the district for shopping.

The high-speed train to Barcelona takes about two and a half to three hours, and you transfer to your hotel on arrival. The tour ends there, timed so that you are in the city before the House of Friendship opens — badge on, trip behind you, and three countries' worth of things to tell people about.

These days belong to the convention, and Soca Islands schedules nothing against them: sessions, the House of Friendship and your own Rotary commitments will take most of the daylight. Convention registration is not included, and the Barcelona hotel for 26 June to 1 July 2027 is an optional add-on rather than part of the trip. For the hours in between, Barcelona needs very little planning. Ideas, all of them your own arrangement: Gaudí's Sagrada Família and Park Güell, both worth a timed ticket booked well in advance; Casa Batlló and La Pedrera on Passeig de Gràcia; the lanes and the Picasso Museum in the Gothic Quarter; La Boqueria for lunch standing up; the view from Montjuïc; an afternoon on the sand at Barceloneta; or the train out to Montserrat if a whole day comes free.

The convention closes and you fly home from Barcelona. Nothing is scheduled: if your flight is late in the day, ask your hotel about holding a bag after check-out and take a last few hours in the city.

On or before 13 June 2027. Day one is Marrakech and the group meets that evening for the welcome dinner, so plan to land that day at the latest. The group flight package leaves New York (JFK) at about 8:45 pm on 12 June, flies nonstop to Casablanca and lands in Marrakech around midday on the 13th. It includes a hotel night near JFK on 11 June, so you are already at the airport the day before and have plenty of leeway. You are also welcome to arrive on or before the 13th on flights of your own choosing.

Yes. You can join the group partway and still travel onward to Barcelona with everyone:
- **Join in Lisbon:** 18 June 2027, 8 nights (Lisbon, Seville, Córdoba and Madrid). US$3,499 per person sharing, US$4,594 single.
- **Join in Seville:** 21 June 2027, 5 nights (Seville, Córdoba and Madrid). US$2,799 per person sharing, US$3,544 single.
You make your own way to Lisbon or Seville; the group flight package is offered with the full journey only. The Barcelona convention hotel add-on is open to everyone.

It depends on the passport you travel on, not where you live. US, Canadian and British citizens do not need a visa for Morocco, Portugal or Spain. Most Caribbean passports need a Morocco e-visa, which you can usually get online if you hold a valid US, UK, Canadian or Schengen visa or a US green card. Jamaican, Guyanese and Surinamese passports also need a Schengen visa for Portugal and Spain, so please start early. If you are not a US or Canadian citizen, you will need a valid US visa to connect through New York (or an ESTA if you are British). Your passport should be valid until at least January 2028. Requirements can change, so please check your own passport with the official government websites; we will send you a personal travel-documents checklist after you book.

Yes. If you arrive on Day 1 of your adventure or book pre-tour accommodation with us, your airport arrival transfer is included. If you choose alternative pre-tour accommodation or arrive by another mode of transport, you’ll need to arrange your own arrival transfer.
Our arrival transfers are private to Soca Islands and are organised in groups based on flight times. Sometimes this means a short wait at the airport until other flights arrive.
