Seeing several European countries in one go can feel like a planning headache. Here the route is already stitched together over 16 days: Rome, Pisa and the cliffside villages of the Cinque Terre in Italy; Nice and Monaco on the French Riviera; Barcelona, Madrid, Granada and Seville in Spain; then the Algarve cliffs and, finally, Lisbon.

Food and evenings out are a big part of the rhythm. You'll cook and share tapas in Barcelona, join a tapas crawl in Granada and have group nights out in cities famous for staying up late. Balance that with a free beach day in Lagos, the choice of the Alhambra or a traditional hammam in Granada, and a mix of guided orientation walks and hours to explore alone.

Your Soca Islands Host travels with the group the whole way, handling the private vehicle transfers, the trains and the check-ins, so the long travel days take care of themselves. Groups are small, from 6 to 16 travelers.

Why This Journey

Linking ten cities in three countries by yourself means a lot of train timetables, border crossings and hotel bookings. This trip does that work for you and still leaves real free time in almost every stop, so you can choose between a museum, a beach or a long lunch.

It suits sociable travelers who want a big, varied first trip across southern Europe: coastal walks and Riviera glamour, Spanish nights out and tapas, Moorish palaces and Portuguese cliffs, all with a group to share it with.

Group itinerary

Arrive in Rome whenever your flight lands; your airport transfer brings you to the hotel near Via Nazionale, within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain and the Roman Forum.

In the evening, your Soca Islands Host takes the group out into Rome's streets for drinks and a first round of getting to know each other.

Overnight in Rome

Today you head north through Tuscany to Pisa, where a short orientation walk shows you around the old center.

The rest of the day is free, and the Leaning Tower on Piazza dei Miracoli is the obvious first stop. The cathedral and baptistery beside it are just as striking, and the riverside streets along the Arno are good for an evening walk.

Overnight in Pisa

Hop on the train to the Cinque Terre. Your park pass and rail ticket are included, so you can drift between Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso, stopping wherever the harbor views pull you in.

Swim off the rocks, take a stretch of coastal path between villages, or settle in for focaccia and a glass of local white wine before heading back to La Spezia for the night.

Overnight in La Spezia

Cross into France and arrive in Nice. The afternoon is open: walk the Promenade des Anglais, find a beach, explore the narrow lanes of the old town or climb Castle Hill for the view over the Baie des Anges.

Overnight in Nice

It's a short hop along the coast to Monaco, which you explore with the group. The principality is tiny, easy to cover on foot and packed with harbor views, from the yachts in Port Hercule to the Prince's Palace on the Rock and the Casino in Monte-Carlo.

Back in Nice, the evening is yours.

Overnight in Nice

A big travel day along the coast, with a stop in Marseille, France's oldest city, before you reach Barcelona.

After an orientation walk, you'll roll up your sleeves at a cooking class, making traditional tapas and then eating them. The night ends out in Barcelona with the group.

Overnight in Barcelona

A free day. See the landmarks, spend it on the beach at Barceloneta, or head out of town to get a feel for Catalonia beyond the city. Your Host can suggest routes and how to get there.

Overnight in Barcelona

Use the morning for whatever you missed in Barcelona: Las Ramblas, the Gothic Quarter or Gaudí's buildings, from Casa Batlló to the Sagrada Família.

An afternoon train takes you across the country to Madrid.

Overnight in Madrid

An orientation walk introduces the capital, then you're free for its museums, plazas and neighborhoods, perhaps the Prado, Retiro Park or the streets around Plaza Mayor.

Madrid is known for late nights, and tonight you head out with the group to see why.

Overnight in Madrid

Take the morning slowly in Madrid, maybe with churros and chocolate, before an afternoon move south to Granada, set beneath the Sierra Nevada.

Overnight in Granada

Get your bearings in Granada on an orientation walk. Then choose between the Alhambra, the hilltop palace complex of the Nasrid sultans, and a soak in a traditional hammam bath.

Tonight the group goes out on a tapas crawl through the city, where a small plate often still comes with each drink.

Overnight in Granada

On to Seville, one of Spain's liveliest cities, with its orange trees, tiled plazas and the great Gothic cathedral.

Optional extras include the Real Alcázar and an evening flamenco show, the art form most closely tied to this city.

Overnight in Seville

You leave Spain behind and arrive on Portugal's Algarve, a coast of sea-carved cliffs and sandy coves, where Lagos is home for two nights.

The old town's cobbled streets lead down to the marina and the beaches, and there's time for an evening wander once you've checked in.

Overnight in Lagos

All yours. Walk the clifftop trails toward Ponta da Piedade, get out on the water to see the sea caves, or just stretch out by the ocean.

Overnight in Lagos

A train takes you north to Lisbon, where an orientation walk shows you the lay of the land.

Spend your free time at Belém or Cristo Rei, in a café with a pastel de nata, or out enjoying the city's nightlife on your last evening together.

Overnight in Lisbon

The trip ends today. Leave whenever your plans require; your departure transfer to Lisbon Airport is included.

We believe solo travelers shouldn’t have to pay extra to explore the world. That’s why our group trips are designed around shared accommodation and do not include a single supplement. Solo travelers joining our group trips are paired in twin or multi-share rooms with another traveler of the same sex for the duration of the trip.

Some of our Independent trips are structured differently. For these itineraries, solo travelers will need to book at the single occupancy rate.
