Three very different sides of Indonesia in ten days. You start inland in Ubud, where daily life revolves around offerings, ceremonies and food. Here you'll cook with a local family, walk through the jungle to a waterfall blessing, ride out in vintage VW jeeps past the rice terraces, and spend a morning at a farming cooperative before a yoga and nidra meditation session.

Then the pace drops. The Gilis have no cars, only sandy lanes, bicycles and horse carts, and a private boat day takes you snorkeling around Gili Meno and Gili Air, with a good chance of seeing sea turtles.

The last stretch is on Bali's Bukit Peninsula in Uluwatu: a beach club day, clifftop sunsets, the sea temple of Pura Luhur Uluwatu and a Kecak performance, finishing with a farewell dinner on the beach.

Your Soca Islands Host is along for the whole journey, and with a maximum of 16 travelers there's a good balance between shared experiences and time to do your own thing.

Why This Journey

Bali can feel crowded if you only see the busiest strips. This trip goes for the parts that show how the island actually lives: a family kitchen, a melukat purification at a waterfall, a farming cooperative and a Kecak performance at the temple it was made for. Then it adds the Gilis, which many Bali visitors never reach because the boat transfers take planning.

It suits travelers who want a mix of culture, wellness and beach time, and who like the idea of a group without a rigid schedule; most afternoons have open time. You'll leave having seen ritual Bali, island Bali and surf Bali, and with a clear idea of which you'd come back for.

Where You'll Stay

Ubud (4 nights): Alaya Resort Ubud, in central Ubud. Gili Trawangan (2 nights): ASTON Sunset Beach Resort - Gili Trawangan, on the island's sunset coast. Uluwatu (3 nights): Renaissance Bali Uluwatu Resort & Spa, on the Bukit Peninsula. Proposed accommodation (or similar), subject to confirmation.

Group itinerary

Make your way to Ubud at your own pace, and use any spare hours to wander the rice paddies or simply rest after the flight.

In the evening the group comes together for the first time over a welcome dinner on a clifftop, coconut mojito in hand as the sun goes down.

Meals: Dinner Overnight in Ubud

Balinese life puts real weight on keeping body, mind and spirit in balance, and today shows you how. A local family opens up their kitchen and teaches you their versions of nasi goreng, satay and martabak, the stuffed pancake sold at night markets across Indonesia.

Later you'll follow a jungle path to a secluded waterfall for a melukat, the traditional purification ritual Balinese people use to cleanse and reset. Bring a change of clothes; you will get wet.

Meals: Breakfast Overnight in Ubud

Climb into a vintage VW jeep and head out through the forest, where the local monkeys are likely to come and say hello.

You'll stop at Ubud Palace, the former royal residence in the center of town, then sit down to lunch overlooking the terraced paddies. The afternoon is open: browse the shops, find a café, or book a Balinese massage.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch Overnight in Ubud

Spend the morning at a farming cooperative, learning how local growers work the land sustainably, then cook lunch alongside a chef using what came out of the garden.

In the afternoon, slow right down with yoga and a guided yoga nidra meditation. Tonight is yours for Ubud's markets and restaurants; pack light, because tomorrow you head for the islands.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch Overnight in Ubud

Today you swap Ubud for the Gilis, a trio of small islands off Lombok where bicycles and horse carts replace traffic.

Once you've checked in, kick off your shoes and get a feel for the sandy lanes before a group dinner with plenty of choice on the menu.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner Overnight in Gili Trawangan

A private boat is yours for the day. You'll hop between Gili Meno and Gili Air, dropping into the water to snorkel over coral, find the famous underwater statues and look out for sea turtles.

Lunch comes at a stop along the way, with time to swim and lie in the sun before heading back to Gili Trawangan for a sunset on the west coast.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch Overnight in Gili Trawangan

Say goodbye to the Gilis and travel back to Bali's southern tip, where Uluwatu's limestone cliffs drop down to famous surf breaks.

The afternoon is unstructured: walk down to one of the beaches below the cliffs, grab a fresh coconut, or treat yourself to a massage. Tonight the group eats together at a beachfront spot.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner Overnight in Uluwatu

Give the day over to one of Bali's well-known beach clubs: claim a daybed, swim, order a cocktail and take the photos you'll want later.

As the light turns gold, watch the sun sink off the Uluwatu cliffs, then keep things casual with dinner up on the clifftops.

Meals: Breakfast Overnight in Uluwatu

Your final full day brings you to Pura Luhur Uluwatu, the sea temple set on the edge of a sheer cliff, for a Kecak performance, where a circle of chanting voices tells a story from the Ramayana as the sun goes down.

Afterward the group heads down to the beach for a farewell dinner and one last round of stories from the trip.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner Overnight in Uluwatu
